Program Note

Momentum Mori was written for the 2023 Fredonia Composition Competition. It is inspired by the phrase ‘Memento Mori’ which reminds the listener of the inevitability of death. The melodic content explores awkward changes in the pulse(the momentum) while also hiding a melancholy song of mourning within its passages. Momentum Mori encourages the performer to pre-emptively engage with their own mortality, exploring grief and desperation through their instrument and their body.
