Program Note
Anxiety, Loathing, Fear. We carry it in our lives, in our hearts, and we let it fester and grow. How long will you stand on the precipice, flirting with such violent ideations?
Written in the Summer of 2021, On the Precipice is an exploration of the composer’s personal experience with depression and anxiety. It draws upon the gradual build of stress before clicking into a paranoia of doubt then into a panicked frenzy before succumbing to an ugly cry for help. The piece ends, calmer and tired, but ultimately back in the same place as the start.
